Strengthening Vocabulary
Why? – Words are the tools of thought that communicate ideas. A good vocabulary is a sign of superior mental ability. The more words you have at your command, the more effective your communication can be, and the more influence you can have on the people around you. Words = Power!
How? - Persons who read widely gradually build up extensive vocabularies. Vocabulary exercise begins with being conscious of new vocabulary in reading and listening experiences. In turn, take the initiative to apply new vocabulary in your daily writing and speaking for this ensures that the words have become engrained in your subconscious.
The Basics:
1. Learn new words from context.
2. Learn vocabulary in groups of related words.
3. Learn vocabulary derived from Greek and Latin roots. Also, consider the role of prefixes & suffixes with each word.
4. Learn vocabulary borrowed from the French, Italian, and Spanish.
5. Learn to form derivatives.
6. Consider synonyms & antonyms as you learn new words.
7. Practice abundantly.
